Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery encompasses the art and science of diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of disease, injuries, defects and esthetic aspects of the jaw and face. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialty in much the same way that orthopedic surgery is a specialty of the medical profession. Oral surgeons complete an additional four to six years of hospital-based residency training beyond the four years of general dental training. As part of their specialty training, oral surgeons study such diverse areas as anesthesia, head and neck surgery, pathology, implantology, facial trauma and radiology.
